WEIPE, LIMPOPO, South Africa - January 30,2025 – G3 Citrus Estates has taken a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions to support its citrus production.
The Venetia diamond mine, established in 1992, spurred Infrastructure development that transformed Weipe into a citrus powerhouse, with farmers capitalising on the region’s ideal climate and Eskom's high voltage power line and Pontdrift substation to cultivate high-quality vegetables and export citrus.
However, the surge in citrus production combined with nearby coal mining has strained the local power infrastructure.
G3 Citrus Estates, established by the Erasmus family in 1996, has responded by embracing sustainable energy solutions. Three years ago, the estate installed a 782 kWp grid-tied solar system, but after facing technical challenges, partnered with Eversolar and Decentral Energy for a significant upgrade.
In just three months, these companies have enhanced the system with an additional 812 kWp of solar PV and a 2.28 MWh battery, with commissioning set for the end of February 2025. This upgrade will meet about 90% of the estate's energy needs, supporting current and future operations. This in turn enables G3 to expand beyond Eskom’s power supply constraints without compromising production, while also reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy security.
Decentral Energy and Eversolar will jointly own, operate and maintain the now 1.6 MWp system with its large 2.28 MWh battery, supplying power to G3 Citrus under a ten-year power purchase agreement.
This initiative positions G3 Citrus as a leader in sustainable agriculture, offering environmental benefits and a competitive edge in an energy-constrained market.
